Michael Porter’s â€Å"Five Forces† Model Summary and interpretation by Prof. Tony Lima February 25, 2006 Figure 1: Porter’s Five Forces From Michael Porter, Competitive Advantage, Simon Schuster, New York, 1985, p. 5 Prof. Michael Porter teaches at the Harvard Business School. He has identified five forces that determine the state of competitiveness in a market. The forces also influence the profitability of firms already in the industry. These five forces are summarized in the above diagram. The fifth force is the degree of rivalry that currently exists among firms already in the industry. ) Here are a few additional details about Porter’s model. 1 1. Barriers to Entry Economies of scale mean larger firms can produce at lower cost per unit. This tends to lower the number of firms in the industry and reduce competition. Proprietary product differences are the characteristics that make a product appeal to a large market segment. But only those characteristics that cannot be copied at low cost by competitors (â€Å"proprietary†) will be a barrier to entry. Brand identity is the extent to which buyers take the brand name into account when making purchase decisions. Capital requirements are the total cost of acquiring the plant and equipment necessary to begin operating in the industry. 1 This material is a summary drawn from Porter’s Competitive Advantage (1985). The material in question is on pages 5 – 8. 1 â€Å"Porter’s Five Forces† by Prof. Lima February 25, 2006 2. Bargaining Power of Suppliers Differentiation of inputs means that different suppliers provide different input characteristics for inputs that basically do the same job. The greater the degrees of differentiation among suppliers the more bargaining power suppliers have. Presence [and availability] of substitute inputs means the extent to which it is possible to switch to another supplier for an input (or a close substitute). The greater the number and closeness of substitute inputs the lower the bargaining power of suppliers. Supplier concentration is the degree of competition among suppliers. Usually the more concentrated the industry, the fewer suppliers and the more control suppliers have over the prices they charge. Greater supplier concentration often means greater supplier bargaining power. Cost relative to total purchases in the industry refers to the amount your firm spends on inputs from a particular supplier compared to the total revenue of all firms in the supplier’s industry. Lower expenditure usually implies more bargaining power for the supplier. The buyer’s bargaining power falls as spending with a particular firm falls simply because the buyer’s business isn’t as important to the supplier. . Threat of Substitutes Relative price performance of substitutes is the price of substitutes for your output compared to the price you are charging. If the price of substitutes is lower, the competitive threat increases as the price differential increases. Switching costs refers to the cost to the buyer of switching from one seller to another. The greater the switching costs the lower the threat of substitutes because buyers have a stronger incentive to stick with a sin gle supplier. Buyer propensity to substitute is the extent to which buyers are willing to consider other suppliers. 4. Bargaining Power of Buyers Buyer concentration versus firm concentration refers to the extent of concentration in the buyer’s industry compared to the extent of concentration in your industry. The more concentrated the buyer’s industry relative to your industry the greater the bargaining power of buyers. Buyer volume is the number of units of your product the buyer purchases from all sources. The greater buyer volume compared to the quantity purchased from you, the greater the bargaining power of buyers. Buyer information is the state of information buyers have about your industry. The more information buyers have about your industry the more bargaining power buyers have. Substitute products means the number and closeness of substitutes available for your product. The greater the number of available substitutes the more bargaining power buyers have. 2 â€Å"Porter’s Five Forces† by Prof. Lima February 25, 2006 Price of your product relative to total expenditures on all products. This is the fraction of total expenditure buyers spend on your products. The greater the fraction of total expenditure the greater the price elasticity of demand and the more bargaining power buyers have. Product differences refers to the degree of differentiation between your product and other products in the market. The greater the differentiation of your product, the lower its price elasticity of demand and the less bargaining power buyers have. Brand identity is the extent to which your brand name is recognized and sought out by buyers. The stronger your brand identity the less bargaining power buyers have. 5. Rivalry Determinants [with other firms in the industry] Industry growth is the speed at which the market is growing. Rapidly growing markets provide less incentive for firms to aggressively compete with each other. Intermittent overcapacity is the amount demand fluctuates during a year (or over a business cycle) and the impact lower demand has on how efficiently the firm is able to use its plant and equipment. In some industries a decrease in demand leads to significant idle productive capacity, while other industries are not as susceptible to this factor. More intense rivalry is likely to be fostered in an industry in which firms face either large amounts of unused plant capacity or face frequent idle capacity. Concentration and balance is the number of firms in the industry and their relative size. An industry in which a few firms supply most of the output is likely to not be very competitive because the large firms will control the market. 3

Case Analysis Pharmaceutical Company - 2946 Words

Introduction In 2013, GlaxoSmithKline’s (GSK) Chinese operations were investigated for paying millions of dollars in bribes to Chinese medical professionals via a network of travel agents and other parties. The UK based pharmaceutical company was bribing these professionals in order to obtain monetary gains and build their presence in China. GSK had a seemingly in-depth compliance program and code of conduct for its employees, management, and third parties, but it fell short as bribery ran rampant. GSK was eventually found guilty by Chinese courts and instructed to pay a significant penalty, while five members also received prison sentences. The gift giving culture in China may be partly to blame for the common practice of bribery, but there are also other internal and external factors to consider. GSK as well as other companies and the Chinses government are using this case as a learning tool and making an effort to make necessary changes to prevent corruption in the futur e. This case provides an excellent example of the risks and challenges companies – not just pharmaceutical companies – may face when doing business in China. GSK’s Ethics and Compliance Program GSK’s company Code of Conduct expected employees to â€Å"make every effort to comply with local laws and norms† (Quelch Rodriguez, 2013, p. 2). Essay on Frida Kahlos Definition of Self - 1687 Words

Frida Kahlo is one of the most famous female painters to originate from the twentieth century, and for good reason. Her art is filled with beauty and creativity, but Frida’s main source of fame comes from the emotions that these paintings invoke, rather than the actual paintings. This is because Frida put herself into every painting she did, leaving traces of her presence all throughout this world and these traces remain long after her physical departure. Frida was a very peculiar and unique individual, hence, Frida’s definition of what a person is, or rather, what a self is, follows accordingly. The self is the reality that one conceives, and this self will live long after the physical body dies, continuing on as long as their†¦show more content†¦Also, it seems that the monkey on Frida’s shoulder is trying to dismantle this thorn necklace, so even with these other guardians or friends that Frida has transcended from her mind to the canvas she still exists in some from of anguish. To extrapolate one step further, Frida feels that no one can help her in this world of suffering, even if they desire to, and she is ultimately isolated in her own sense of reality. Throughout her career, Frida had shown many different themes of her life through her paintings. It seems clear, through analyzation of her paintings, that Frida lived something of a double life. Frida paints herself in distinctly different ways at times, sometimes she is a beautiful woman with strength like iron, and sometimes she is a frail damsel who has been broken already and will be broken again. Contrasting paintings include Self Portrait with Monkeys (Kahlo, 1) and Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace, Diego and I (Kahlo, 1) and The Love Embrace of the Universe, the Earth (Mexico), Me, Diego, and Mr. Xolotl (Kahlo, 1). All of these paintings show that not only is there a contrast in her personality, in fact, Frida’s is actually two different people, as sh e paints it. Free Trade agreement free essay sample

There are many advantages and isadvantages of the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and America, yet Canada is not getting much of a good deal, only in certain ways are Canadians at an advantage. Some advantages are: an increase in production, and better U. S-Canada relations. Some of the disadvantages are: diminished population growth, loss of Jobs, diminished sovereignty, and workers facing concessions on wages, working conditions, and living standards. To begin, an advantage to the FTA is an increase of production. Canadian businesses would increase production to keep up with American producers, so as not to be bought out. With more investment in Canadian businesses due to elimination of tariffs, Canadian industry will grow and expand, increasing production and efficiency (Bain Pg. 376). Another reason why the Free Trade Agreement is an advantage to Canada is that it helps relations between Canada and the U. S, because the two nations have not always seen eye to eye, they now have something to connect them. We will write a custom essay sample on Free Trade agreement or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The FTA helps the two countries get on each others good side due to help from one another in business and trade. To sum it up, there are not very many reasons why the Free Trade Agreement is an advantage, but there are some. There are many reasons why the FTA is a disadvantage. Firstly, the population of Canada isnt increasing like it should; because of the FTA our workers are going to America to get Jobs because America can offer more money to their workers because they have the money to do it, whereas Canadian businesses are lowering wages to make more money to try to keep up with the American production. Canadian workers follow the raw materials to America The land of opportunity to get more money. Everyone leaves to America making our population not increase because if they stay here, the workers may not earn good oney, so they cannot spend it, so goods do not get produced. The result: a downward economic spiral(Finn Pg. 10). Another reason the FTA is a disadvantage is increased unemployment. Many American companies that have branch plants operating in Canada will become redundant and be shut down. These branch plants were established in Canada to provide shelter behind the tariff wall. Tariffs were not added to selling price of their products because they were behind the tariff wall. Under the FTA, there are no tariffs, so the branch becomes unnecessary, and the customers can be supplied equally well if not better and cheaply from one plant in he U. S. The closing of these branch plants results in many Canadian Jobs disappearing (Conklin Pg. 28). Also, many businesses that are owned completely by America, where there is a bigger market and more opportunity for growth, and there are no taxes to sell products to Canada from the U. S under the FTA. The moving and shutting down of these factories and plants creates more unemployment and less Job opportunities (Bowker Pg. 32). Many Canadians considering starting a business in Canada may be lured to America to start their business, because with the removal of ariffs, these companies can supply Canadian customers Just as easily from America while being nearer the larger American markets with the advantage of lower operating costs. This idea of starting businesses in the U. S instead of Canada, takes away Jobs from Canadian workers before even giving them a chance. Another reason for the FTA to be a disadvantage is Canada as a nation losing its sovereignty and independence. Ownership and control of Canadian industry and resources will gravitate towards the United-States under the Free Trade Agreement. Decision making for these industries will be transferred to the boardrooms in America. Economic powers movement is usually followed by political power, so it is probable that Canada could face the eventual loss of political independence. Lastly, an example of the disadvantages of the FTA is Canadian workers facing concessions on wages, working conditions, and living standards (Conklin Pg. 30). Canadas extensive social benefit programs like, health care system, unemployment insurance benefits, and family allowance, which do not exist on the same scale in the U. S, are vulnerable to attack as unfair subsidies to be reduced or eliminated. Which in turn would ncrease the cost of living for Canadians affected by the changes. Money would be needed to help pay for businesses without help, which could lower workers wages and have many workers losing their Jobs. The Americans are basically trying to assimilate the Canadians and take away their distinction and independence. So in summation, the FTA is not very advantageous because of Job loss, minimal population growth, disappearing sovereignty and worker concessions. Therefore, the disadvantages of the Free Trade Agreement outweigh those of the advantages, so Canada is not getting a very good deal.

Premarital Counseling

All married couples would wish the old adage, ‘and they lived happily ever after’ to come true; unfortunately, to over 50% of married couples, this remains that; a wish.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Premarital Counseling specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Behavioral researches confirm that, 50% of all marriages end up in divorce, an unfeigned but a deplorable fact. During the first days of marriage, everything might seem blissful until the reality sets in and the couples realize they have different likes and dislikes. Even if a couple appears to be a perfect pair, differences soon emerge and this worrying trend calls for resolute ‘treatment’. Just as an infectious disease will keep on recurring unless the proper immune system is developed, divorce will keep on occurring unless proper steps are taken to counter this unrelenting social thorn. Fortunately, research assures that, premarital counseling can cut down divorce rates by up to 30%, a significant percentage. Premarital counseling equips couples with invaluable information about what to expect in the uncertain world of marriage. Murray and Murray (2004) posit that, â€Å"Pre-marital counseling is a wonderful way to prepare†¦for your life together†¦a few sessions of counseling gives you a chance to look at what you want as a couple† (p. 14). Premarital counseling develops skills required for couples to stay together. Like a business, which requires a concrete plan and implementation strategy, marriage requires unhesitating plan and execution strategy to improve its chances of survival. Fortunately, premarital counseling offers the strategy together with its implementation criteria required for marriage prosperity. Six factors define premarital counseling as a valid tool of cutting down divorces. Setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound goals underlines the withstanding significance of premarital counseling in reducing divorce rates. Sharing common goals aligns couples in the same direction and the resultant unity reduces the frequency of conflicts that predate divorce. The other factors draw from the goal setting aspect, working in concert to ensure any feasible survival of marriage. Schumm and Denton (1979) warn that, â€Å"money is the biggest sole factor that causes couples to argue and fight† (p. 30). Fortunately, premarital counseling takes couples through a financial journey exploring pertinent issues like expenditure, savings, use of credits and so forth. With sufficient understanding on how to handle finances, couples can enjoy their marriage regardless of whether they have lots of money or peanuts.Advertising Looking for essay on psychology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Communication and conflict resolution is another critical yet neglected area in marriage. Premarital co unseling explores and emphasizes on the importance of communication and conflict resolution in marriage. Some couples assume the only way out of a conflict is to keep silent while others hold that, they have to win every argument to win a conflict. Nevertheless, premarital counseling rebuts all the misconceptions surrounding communication and conflict resolution in marriage and outlines amicable ways of handling the same. As aforementioned, first days in marriage may seem blissful; hoverer, the arrival of the first child might herald conflicts. To avoid this scenario, premarital counseling devotes enough time to explore the issue of children and parenting to save couples the pain of groping with marriage realities. Even though many couples often overlook the issue of spirituality, premarital counseling understands clearly how differing spiritual perception can tear apart a seemingly good marriage. Therefore, the counselors give insights concerning the same. Finally, premarital couns elors help couples to outline roles and expectations in marriage to avoid conflict of interest later in marriage. In the light of all these compelling premarital counseling elements, I personally concur premarital counseling can prevent divorce. Moreover, numbers do not lie, and research has confirmed that premarital counseling cuts down divorce rate by a whopping 30%; whopping because, if 50% of all marriages end up in divorce, then it means that 30% of the remaining 50% remain in marriage due to premarital counseling. Benifits of the death penalty essays

Benifits of the death penalty essays The justification of the death penalty is a constant controversy in todays society. The ultimate decision is a burden over all who execute this final sentence and the society that allows for it. Is it just or unjust? Does the criminal deserve this heinous sentence? According to 80% of United States citizens surveyed, the answer was yes (Stewart 1). Perhaps one of the biggest reasons for societys decision to go pro death penalty is that no executed murder has ever killed again (Lowe 20). It eliminates the burden on society that the murder creates in prison and serves as deterrence for future murders. However, twenty or so percent of death penalty opponents in the United States have made their own justification of why the death penalty should be nullified. They believe that combating violence with more violence doesnt solve anything and question the logic of killing to show that killing is wrong. Although there is much controversy surrounding the death penalty, it is clear that it is a necessary part of the judicial process. Opponents argue against the death penalty for a number of reasons. In the first place, it is in violation with the teachings of the Bible and United States Constitution, but more importantly they believe this action is immoral due to the barbaric methods. They also argue that it is a racial issue and an expensive method to put an end to crime. There seems to be some legitimate arguments. In the words of the New Testament, Jesus once said, Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her. (John 8:7) John Dear, a death penalty opponent interpreted these words. He wrote: Jesus not only condemned the death penalty, he poetically chastised the scribes and Pharisees for considering themselves sinless and able to pass judgment on others. Jesus words made them realize their own sinfulness and filled them with shame (Dear 75). Even today we have...
